2020 NEWSLETTERS
Newsletter 20/05 (6th December 2020)
Just a few lines to end the year, as of now 2021 is in a sort of state of suspended animation, lock downs come and go, do’s and don’ts alter and the “jab” remains the presumed best way out of this for many. We as a club will be ready as far as possible to play in late April as per usual, but what will be allowed and organised remains to be seen. The leagues we play in may well all take differing approaches, for instance some may hang on until the very last days before season is due to start before issuing fixtures whilst others may prepare as if there will be a definite on time start and only make a late decision if this actually occurs. Flexibility will be the key for all concerned! As matters clarify Secretary John or I will no doubt keep all members informed as to the state of play or not.
Our club accounts have been recently sent for audit, I can say they don’t make good reading, but we are undoubtedly better off than many clubs, but we are not penniless, these account will be circulated to all in the new year.
As for the green and bowls club as a whole, for December I’ve not seen the green look better, yes no play in 2020 did help, but our extreme hot spells last year did the grass no good at all, thanks to the tireless regular efforts of Dave Salmon & Mick to whom we are all thankful. We hope shortly to do an upgrade of the watering system which should help with the problems associated with extreme hot spells of weather in the future
Regret to report Margaret Smye who for several years helped out at many bowls club functions sadly passed away after a lengthy illness, our best wishes go to Brian and family.
To finish may I just say to all members and their families, please stay safe over the coming months, let’s hope “normality” or close to it returns sooner rather than later. Whatever your intentions over the festive period I wish you all the best and for a hopefully far better 2021,
Come on the Cali

Newsletter 20/04 (1st September 2020)
The season that never was!, no doubt a few members who did express a wish to play on the green this season are asking why they have not been able to do so. When the Social Club did start to open at weekends both John & myself looked at what was required to allow play correctly following the agreed Covid19 protocols for bowls, it is far from simple if done correctly, from mandatory timed rink booking, signage as to do’s and don’ts, sanitizers, cleaning equipment, procedures for cleaning and not to mention social distancing for most. It is not a issue to cut corners on, I do know some clubs follow “their version” of what the protocols are, but should there be an problem who will carry the can and be responsible! Neither John nor myself would put ourselves in that iffy position so it’s do it correctly or not at all, which I believe is how CSC would expect it to be done, from all accounts they have done much work to get the club open and gone about it in the correct way. Once we knew the Social Club was opening it would take a week or so to get the various items needed, plus some extra work to prepare the green for actual play. So with this in mind we could have been ready by about the 7th August had everything gone to plan? As I said right at the start of this newsletter there were a limited number of members who expressed an interest in playing this season, given that there would be 5 or maximum 6 weekends left in “the season”, the amount extra work to put the Covid19 protocols in place (as listed earlier) and that we have not had a definitive yes it’s OK to play from CSC, the only sensible route to take is no play this season.
Given the above and the continuing social distancing rules there will be no annual dinner this year, decisions need to be made sooner rather than later, as for a quiz either sometime before Christmas and/or pre next season then we must wait and see, firstly again what CSC will allow, after all they are limited as to how many people they can have on the premises and will people be willing to support it. Personally I think later this year may be too soon, but either John or I will speak with quizmaster Ian Page on this matter.
There will be some end of season work to be done on the green, much like any other year, grass has no clue about Covid19 and hopefully some of the regulars will be able to assist shortly. Over the last few months we have had some very hot weather and the green has been suffering somewhat, hopefully if we get the required work done a little earlier than usual it will have recovered by season 2021. As always we can’t thank Mick & Sammo enough for their efforts with the green and surround over this difficult season, without their input we would have been struggling.
Turning now to administration of the club, as nothing much has changed except we are all a year older and in consultation with the bowls club committee we think it is ok to follow many bowls organisations and not have a AGM this year. I believe all those elected at our AGM last term are willing to continue for 2021, so we trust members will be happy with this hopefully one off arrangement, so should you have anything you would have raised at the AGM may I suggest you contact either John or myself. On the financial side Debbie will as per the norm produce the year end accounts which will be audited, these will be especially important this year as we have had no match income (rink fees & cards) this year. The timing of calling off the competitive season could not have come at a worse time, much of the seasons expenditure, e.g. winter projects, club & green maintenance, general admin costs, registrations, affiliations, competition entries had already been paid out, some of these expenses have be repaid to us, but much has not. We sincerely thank all who did pay their fees, we did secure a small grant from the “Community Emergency Refund” via The Government, Sport England & Bowls England, and it all helps. To save costs the 2019/20 final accounts will be circulated to members next year with the season opening letters as per usual. Regarding county & National competition entries, unless you let Secretary John know by text or email by 21st September 2020 if you wish to change, add to or delete your entries made for 2020 season they will automatically be rolled forward and charged for if you have not already paid.
As for the future, well let’s all hope for normality, not the new kind, the much written about “new norm” just plain old style normal, regretfully I’m not convinced this will be possible even as far away as next April, who knows what next season will bring! Over the coming months either John or myself will keep our ears to the ground to be abreast of the latest info, which we will then pass on as required.
That’s about all, if a much need fund raising quiz materialises then we will be in touch. Other than that for now please please keep safe and well, we want to see you all back in 2021 when hopefully we can all get back to playing bowls once again

Newsletter 20/03 (11th June 2020)
Way back in February when I composed my last news letter I doubt many people, including myself, would have guessed what was installed for our country let alone our bowls club. The word tragedy comes to mind, on this occasion I don’t feel It’s too strong a word to use, there is not a single person who has not been effected in some way, for some the passing of a love one or friend is about a raw as it can get, for others the effects are superficial, children at home from school, people being paid for being at home from work and then there are all those who fall somewhere in between. The first group mentioned will never be the same, whilst for the majority normality will return eventually with little in the way of long term scaring. I would like to add my heartfelt sympathy to anyone who has been affected, to my knowledge we have lost 3 people directly known to Cali BC over this period, Ray Paternoster and former members Peter Peakman & Chris Phillips. To date I’ve been one of the lucky ones, with some help from friends and neighbours, by following “the guidelines”, and just by being as careful as possible my closest friends and family are all OK, but personally will not feel at all safe until a vaccine or cure is available.
Mention following “the guidelines” this applies to the club as well, I know Secretary John has been keeping members informed of the latest updates which cover bowling, whilst “the rules” allow outdoor bowling to take place we can all see it’s not as simple as that, there are several matters which can effect things, i.e. numbers & combination of people on the green, social distancing, safety product availability and site access. Most matters on the previous list can be overcome by the bowls club, but on the site access issue we are dependent on the Social Club, it would be wrong to ask the Social Club to allow our bowling members to use the facilities whilst other club members could not, so I see this as the limiting factor. When the social club opens in whatever form the bowls club I trust will be able to follow suit, who knows we may be able to run some club competitions for those who wish to enter and may be other events as well. To meet this target work is on going to prepare our green to be ready for play, now the lockdown rules have been relaxed other members are becoming involved in maintenance again. Over the lockdown period as John has already mentioned in his briefings Mick as continued to keep our green and the surrounds ticking over, I doubt any of us members can thank him enough for the commitment and effort, MICK THANK YOU FROM EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US
My final few words, relate to a subject mentioned in previous correspondence to members from both John & myself, we have asked before and there are still members who have not paid their basic fees OR HAD THE DECENCY to let Treasure Debbie know that for whatever reason they are unable to pay just now. As I have said previously I would not expect those who do pay to “loose out” I’m sure we will be able wave most if not all of the subscriptions for 2021, but our outgoings continue, the bills still have to be paid!, so come on it should not take repeated reminders to take one course of action or the other it is the right thing to do please comply!.
In the mean time to all bowlers, their friends and families, stay safe, stay well and look forward to once again being involved in a sport we all enjoy and have missed over this appalling period,

Dear All
On behalf of Chairman Chris and all the bowls committee members, we hope this mail finds you all well, and that you are taking care of yourselves and family members at this awful time. You recall some weeks ago, you received your yearly subscriptions along with further notification we wish you all to continue with payment of these fees. To date, only a few members have adhered this request, so I write to ask that during this hard and difficult time, if you find the money to pay your subscription, please do so.
We also understand that these are very hard times therefore if you are currently not in the position to afford your fees, we understand and ask as your committee you kindly let one of us know, so we can still sort our finances out. The SCBA has written to myself informing me that in the light of this lockdown being downgraded, it is hoped that the senior and junior cups can still run in the later months this year.
Your committee has already been in discussions of ways of being able to enjoy this great game once the lockdown has been lifted. This includes arranging competitive friendly's, a Tuesday night pairs league or a Wednesday singles league for example. If you have any additional thoughts please write to me.
Also, if any of you have any PPE that you have no use for and feel you would like to donate to a good cause, please get in touch with me so we can assist those currently in need.
On a sombre note, we offer our deepest sympathies to Janet Paternoster and family, following the sad news of husband Ray's passing. Also to our treasurer Debbie Allum and family, who has also suffered a sad loss. Our thoughts are with you both.
Finally, I think we should all pass on our grateful thanks to Mick Page who has decided to continue working on the green whilst remaining sensible about this, he has continued his hard work in readiness for the opening of our season.
From all of your bowls committee, we wish you well and please take care of yourselves whilst looking forward to when at last we can all meet up
Kind regards
John

Newsletter 20/01 (28th February 2020)
It’s a new decade, a new year and the new season is fast approaching (opening day Club Triples Sunday 19th April) as always much work has been carried out over the winter months mainly by Mick & Sammo although as always several others have lent a hand, all members should be thankful for that. Looking forward over the next week or so some help would be appreciated with scarifying and a week or two after that more help with a general tidy around the bowls green, so if you are able to offer a couple of hours or so to help please let me know and weather depending I’ll try to sort out a suitable date. Work to recover the side ditches is complete, it just leaves the infill (shredded tyre) to be added before the new season, judging by the amount of fence coat, paint & Sadolin I’ve bought all round the green should be spick & span, if not I’ll need to check a couple of members houses!
In the last newsletter I mentioned that we had to find a ‘B’ Captain, this matter was discussed by your committee and it was agreed who to approach, currently the person concerned is “thinking about it”, a decision will be made over the next few weeks.
Although we have “lost” a couple of league teams we did enter EBF Durham Centenary Trophy and have an away draw at Haughley PF, but that’s not till July time, also for this year we re-entered the Marie Curie Cup no draw as yet. Most of the other fixture information is now in so my next task is to compile a Fixture List & Diary of Events for the coming season I hope to have “provisional” version on the web site by 8th March ish!.
You should all soon receive your pre season letter setting out what you owe and giving plenty of information, please take some time to read it much of what’s in there is important. A couple of points to note after a security issues last season the social club were not happy with us, they are rightly concerned that we have key to the club toilets and we must insure the social club outer door is dead locked “ not just the magnetic lock. As such Monday to Thursday afternoons unless you have booked a rink the main club toilet area will be security alarmed & fully locked so there can be no access. Members must be the only ones to use the door key, visitors will have to be accompanied by a member who will be responsible for locking and unlocking the outer door, in addition an added layer of security will see the key and card kept in a safe in the pavilion, (safe code will be in your letter). We have to make every effort to comply with this demand if not we will lose the use of the facilities, which could cause a lot of problems, please THIS IS IMPORTANT. Also you will see from the pre season letter your committee have agreed to play the early rounds of both 2 & 4 bowl club Pairs in an attempt to get these games played with less fuss. The 4 Bowl will be on Bank Holiday Monday 25th May & the 2 Bowl Friday 4th September. You will be expected to enter on the form as normal; the draw will take place on or near to the date.
Recently our club website www//calibc.co.uk has been updated with 2020 information, for those members who have not set up a password for the secure areas of the site (Members Area, Pay & Purchase) please contact Chris to be able to do so.
I have excellent news to report on Stuart Walsh’s progress, having seen him a couple of time since the New Year he is pretty much the “old” Stuart. He needs to work on his muscles’ strength and hence his balance after a long period of inactivity, he is talking of playing again and has been spotted at the social club. He will need a further medical procedure, but not a massive op like he has had and wish him a speedy and full recovery. More good news is that Phil Bradley will be playing again next season after his health issue and we may have a new recruit. Regretfully this good news is balanced by the fact that at least 3 playing members from last year will not rejoining and sadly (some may be happy) due to my finger problem I will not be bowling again unless something changes
Lastly we have the first fund raising quiz of the year coming up on the 5th April, as usual we ask members to try to get a team together (max 6) and come along, questions cover all standards and light refreshments are provided, it’s just for a fun night out with a start time of 7.30pm.
That’s all for now, let’s hope we have another competitive season,
